Autumn Interior Design Trends – The Natural Look

The unmistakable signs are here – shorter evenings, changing leaves and a definite crispness in the air means that autumn has officially arrived.

While some feel it the start of the long spiral into winter, we here and Michael John Flooring find that autumn is one of the busiest and most exciting times of year for us. Probably because it’s the perfect time of year to focus on getting the home ready for the colder months and inevitably, spending more time indoors.

The personal feelings that we associate with autumn resonate strongly with the natural world. The change in weather, the leaves falling, first frosts etc. this is very much reflected in the top trend this year with the naturalistic look proving incredibly popular.

If you’re looking to batten down the hatches in style, we’ve put together some of the top tips to help inspire you.

FLOORING
Using natural materials such as wood for your flooring is the perfect way to be on trend this autumn. We provide an excellent selection of hardwood flooring options.
Alternatively, you can create a stunning, natural look using LVT (luxury vinyl tiles), which have all the visual benefits of natural materials such as wood stone and metal, with added benefits which include ease of maintenance, warmth and a consistent look throughout your chosen room. With brands such as Amtico, Moduleo UK and Karndean in stock, we will be sure to find the perfect match for you.

DARK GREEN
Sticking with the natural look, dark green is the colourway to look to. Accent walls, soft furnishings, themed wall art and dark house plants are all great options. However, if you want to keep your home simple, a statement rug is a great way to go. Large or small, a bold rug can break up large, open spaces whilst adding warmth to colder rooms. What’s more, when the summer comes around it can be put away to achieve a more minimalistic look during the warmer months.

TEXTURES
Adding texture is an ideal way to emulate the natural look. Exposing brickwork on a chimney breast or sanding down the original floorboards in a room to expose your homes natural features and textures is a great way. However, if you’re not looking for any extreme renovations there are some simple tricks you can use, such as a basket of pine cones by the fire place, filling a vase up with dried sticks, twigs and acorns or even adding a cactus plant or two.
